Behind the Scenes: Directing a VT for the BBC’s Oxford vs. Cambridge Boat Race 2025

Director and Shooting P/D

For rowing fans, the Oxford vs. Cambridge Boat Race is more than just a sporting event—it’s a clash of history, tradition, and sheer physical endurance. This year, as part of the BBC’s coverage of the 2025 race on April 13th, I had the privilege of directing a VT that delves into the heart of Oxford’s male and female crews. Spending three days embedded with these athletes, I witnessed the grit, determination, and history that fuel their pursuit of victory.

Day 1: Immersion in the Oxford Way

My journey began before sunrise, a fitting start given the brutal training schedule these rowers adhere to. Arriving at Oxford’s training facilities, I was met with the sound of rowing machines humming in unison as the athletes completed their morning ergometer session. Filming this up close, I wanted to capture the sheer physical intensity—sweat dripping, lungs burning, muscles straining. The camaraderie was evident, with teammates pushing each other to the limit.
Later in the day, we moved to the boathouse on the River Thames, where I conducted interviews with key members of the men’s and women’s crews. Their passion for the race was palpable, their knowledge of its 195-year history encyclopedic. For some, this race was the pinnacle of their rowing careers; for others, it was deeply personal, a chance to avenge past losses or continue family legacies.

Day 2: On the Water

Filming on the river was an adventure in itself. With a chase boat alongside the crew, we captured dynamic shots of the team slicing through the water with precision. The coxswains’ voices rang out with sharp commands, guiding their crews through grueling pieces designed to simulate race conditions.
Oxford’s rowers train in all weather conditions, and on this particular morning, the mist hung low over the Thames, adding a cinematic quality to our footage. As I reviewed the shots, I knew we had captured something special—the rhythm of the oars, the power of each stroke, and the unspoken unity among the athletes.

Day 3: The Human Stories

Beyond the physical demands, I wanted our VT to highlight the personal journeys of these athletes. Some rowers had overcome injuries; others had balanced intense academic pressures with their commitment to training. We filmed in quieter moments—athletes reflecting by the river, adjusting their equipment, or sharing a laugh in the boathouse. These human touches would add depth to the segment, allowing viewers to connect with the teams beyond their technical prowess.

Final Thoughts

As our three days with Oxford’s crews came to an end, I felt an immense respect for the dedication that goes into preparing for this historic race. Our VT will serve as a window into this world—a glimpse of the sweat, sacrifice, and spirit that define the Oxford vs. Cambridge Boat Race.
On April 13th, as millions tune in to watch the action unfold on the Tideway, I hope our segment brings them closer to the heart of the competition. Whether you’re cheering for dark blue or light, one thing is certain: this race is about more than just crossing the finish line first—it’s about legacy, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
