Tungsten Lighting - Interview Setup for the Royal Northern Sinfonia

Lighting the Scene

As with the solo performances for the Royal Northern Sinfonia's Meet the Musicians Series, the interviews were also lit with tungsten lamps only. The room tone and base background level for the setup were restricted by the house lights which were at maximum.

This left me a little under-exposed for a T5.6 on the tighter lens (85mm), so the get-out-of-jail-free card was to shoot the B-Camera in high-base at 6400 - my preference over opening up and becoming too shallow on the face, losing both eyes in focus on a moving camera.

A-Cam was at a base of 800 with a T2 on the 35mm, allowing for a matched exposure on B-Cam at 6400 without ND, or 12800 with a 0.3 if I wanted to trade a lower noise floor for a stop highlight retention.

The key was a booklight, powered by two 2k Fresnels, into a sheet of 4x4 muslin through a 6x6 magic cloth. There is negative fill on the right side of the subject and I think a couple of nets in various places. The backlight was a 4x4 foam core bounce with a single Source 4, shaped for the desired output. In the distance was a 1k Fresnel with 216 to lift the key on the subject's back left and side.
