What is a Film Producer?

A film producer is someone who is in charge of a film's production. Whether employed by a production company or working independently, producers organise many aspects of film production, such as script selection, writing, directing, and editing, and securing financing

What is a Film Director?

In the most basic sense, a director is a person who makes significant decisions on film production. They are in control of a project's aesthetic and dramatic elements, as well as writing the script and directing the cast and crew to bring it all to life on set and in the movie.

What is a Producer/Director?

Producer directors are responsible for both the creation and production of content as well as the direction of the action. In practice, this means they are doing two jobs at the same time.

Depending on the production, a producer-director may be in charge of the entire production, such as a documentary with one or two significant characters. This is so they can form a trusting relationship with the individual or people they're shooting and keep track of the story.

They may direct a crew with one or two cameras on a high-budget show. They frequently operate the camera themselves on smaller assignments. Some producer-directors edit their material too.

What does a Producer/Director do?

As Freelance Producers/Directors, their experience covers many aspects of film-making.

They can produce/direct for broadcast, documentary, PR/brand films and charities. They must have a strong sense of narration and aim to tell the story in all that is produced.

With extensive experience in working with different departments, they ensure that all onscreen talent feel comfortable and willing to collaborate, keeping an eye on key messages and core responsibilities of the content that is being created. Using their experience in the field, they ensure that, first and foremost, a strong narrative is captured.

An assistant producer and a researcher are frequently assigned to the producer/director to aid them in gathering the necessary information, locations, props, archive material, and extras. The team may also lend a hand during the shoot. Producer directors develop a shooting script before filming that outlines what they plan to film and any scripts that will need to be spoken by a presenter. If no presenters are available, they may conduct their own interviews (cutting out their questions in the edit). They'll also prepare a filming schedule detailing what they plan to shoot and what will be included in a final call sheet by the production management team.

Producers/Directors also sign off on health and safety documents to ensure they've thought of everything that could go wrong during filming. They may consult with business lawyers to make sure their script and planned content are compliant.

Who does a Producer/Director work with?

Producers/Directors report directly to the series producer and work with a team to manage any presenters or contributors throughout filming. They oversee a team of assistant producers and researchers on a daily basis and communicate with production management on schedule, locations, and health and safety.

What is a Producer/Director good at?

  • Creativity: be ambitious, making a variety of content, write well and create an appropriate accompanying visual style, have flair and originality.
  • Communication: instruct presenters on delivery, produce contributions, and put everyone at ease by effectively directing a team on what's needed and a crew on shots.
  • Multitasking: be able to pay attention to what others are saying while checking shots and perhaps operating the camera, and be accountable for everyone's safety.
  • Adaptability: ability to operate well in demanding and changing circumstances, solve problems on the go, make quick and effective judgments, and prioritise.
  • Photography: have a solid understanding of composition, light, colour, texture, focus, and framing; be up-to-date on the latest technology, know how to use it, and know the best solutions for various productions.
