Rings of Power

Amazon Studios

For the second season of this epic fantasy series, I operated a Pro Tools rig dedicated to audio playback and recording for scenes utilising what was called the "scale" technique. This method was employed when characters of vastly different sizes—such as a dwarf and a giant—shared the screen. Initially, all actors would rehearse together in a full-performance run-through. Then, scenes were filmed separately for each group, with my rig playing back the corresponding dialogue into the actors' earpieces to maintain timing and performance continuity.

To ensure precise synchronisation between camera movements and audio playback, I designed my rig to receive a trigger from the camera department, automatically putting Pro Tools into record when the camera move began. During rehearsals, I captured isolated audio feeds from the production sound mixer (either Adrian Bell or James Bain across two units) via Dante. Between takes, I quickly edited the recordings, allowing for seamless playback of individual character performances as needed.

For example, if a take focused on the dwarfs, I muted their recorded tracks while my rig—triggered again by the camera department—played back the giants' audio from the previous take, simultaneously recording the new dwarf performances. This workflow ensured tight synchronisation between performances while maintaining the same camera move each time 'scale' shots were used.
