Airfryers Made Easy

Food is a huge passion of mine! From savoring exotic flavors around the globe to diving into local delicacies or cooking at home, I'm always up for a culinary adventure. So, when I got the chance to embark on my first DOP (Director of Photography) gig focusing on food in a studio, I was beyond thrilled!

Usually, my work revolves around lighting up faces for interviews, but delving into the realm of food cinematography was a delightful twist. I quickly learned that just like illuminating people, lighting up food is an art in itself. Enter the home economist, the magician behind the scenes who ensures every dish looks camera-ready, akin to a makeup artist's touch on a model.

For this set up:

  • Canon C500 II on the Easyrig as the main cam
  • Canon C70 Rigged overhead for a birds eye shot of the prepping area. This was connected to my laptop so I could change camera settings remotely.
  • I had a background light (Aputure 600x) through the kitchen window to create 'sunlight' on the background
  • I wanted a high key lighting so had one big key light source though diffusion and a half a stop fill bounce
  • I also added a kicker light to the key side and a backlight for the chef and a ceiling bounce to lift the exposure in the kitchen

Working alongside an incredible team made the experience all the more enjoyable, with Dean's culinary expertise shining through every dish. And as fate would have it, we discovered a charming connection – turns out, Dean is good friends with my partner's mum! Small world, delicious adventures.
