My work in Outside Broadcast is nearly always as a Sound Assistant. Out here in Saudi Arabia, I've been taking care of the presentation stage and all of the presenters and contributors. Very often, these jobs in the MENA region are fraught compared with work in the Western world. Venues aren't built 'til the last moment, language barriers are a huge problem and not all the kit we requested has arrived. Keeping the 'talent' onside and paying close attention to their needs is a huge part of this sound work as well as being able to 'zone out' of chaos happening live around you and concentrate solely upon getting the audio working and back to the truck to the mixing team. It's a hugely rewarding discipline.
