S1.E2 ∙ Southern Ocean: Into the Freezer

Explorer Victor Vescovo and his team head into the most challenging ocean on Earth, the Southern Ocean, where they dodge menacing icebergs and search for the ocean's deepest point in the vast underwater canyon of the South Sandwich Trench.

This episode was filmed over a one month voyage on the DSSV Pressure Drop, an ex-US Navy Sub-hunter, now research vessel and the mother ship for the full ocean depth submersible called the Limiting Factor. An ocean crossing science lab, crewed by geologists, seabed-mapping geographers, marine zoologists, mechanics, and engineers - all of them adventurers.

We crossed the southern Atlantic Ocean, tested systems in South Georgia, and continued south across the 60*S boundary and ventured in to the Southern Ocean. Sound recording main characters using on board recording personal mics, booming everyone else, and flying drone from the ship during the mission was certainly a challenge at times, but somehow we rode out the storms, kept ourselves warm and documented an incredible achievement.

Skills and services required

Location sound kit, on-board recording and TX personal mics, Mavic 2 Pro and Inspire 2 drone.
