  • Ancient Apocalypse: The Americas. Ep 2.

    ITN Productions for Netflix

    2023-2024

Here's a good example of how the role of sound recordist and drone operator, as part of a small and brilliant crew can achieve so much in one BIG day. This is the opening sequence of Episode 2 of Ancient Apocalypse: The Americas, made by ITN Productions for Netflix and is the product of a very intense shooting day.

After travelling for a few hours by boat, road (including a vehicle mechanical incident!), farm track, then finally on foot to our mountain location. Thank goodness we had some porters!

This sequence includes drone footage of the presenter's arrival on a dirt track road, location establishers (ramped in the edit), non-sync wides of the interview, and details of rock art some of which were inaccessible on foot. I also recorded sound of vehicle and tyre noise, ambience of the jungle, contributor interview with presenter and studio master interview.

  • Expedition Deep Ocean

    Atlantic Productions for Discovery

    2018

    Episode 2: the Southern Ocean.

Adventurer Victor Vescovo continues his quest to become the first person to find and visit the deepest point of each of our oceans. Our month long voyage from South America, via South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, to the deepest point of the Southern Ocean was filmed by a small but highly capable crew. For me combining drone filming from a ship, whilst also recording sound from many sources, often at the same time, provided many challenges. I had six of the main characters miked up with Audio Ltd A-10 on-board recording radio mics, including Victor, 7000m under the water. Then for the critical moments of launch and recovery, I would lay down the sound kit, still recording, and fly the drone to capture spectacular footage of the operation from above or from afar. It may sound mad to abandon my sound kit at this moment, but really, I was never going to adjust microphones on people in the middle of this total mayhem, so trusting the sound equipment, and mic placement in advance, allowed me to take up the role of drone pilot.

This whole sequence is not far off real time. See if you can identify when I landed the drone and picked up my boom and sound mixer.

    2023

A section of the programme from Series 4 that I worked on with Alison Hammond and Kate Garraway, which involves them following an unknown itinerary as they meet experts who help them to discover members of their family tree. This part was filmed in Jamaica and features in car sound recording and transmission to a follow vehicle, then quick turnaround at location to filming with contributors. On most occasions we as a crew were able to get ahead to prepare for arrival, (this is where I could mic up contributors), helping to make the actual encounter as natural as possible.
